MUSEUMS OF IZMIR
The first museum of Izmir was established in 1927 in the Ayavukla Church in the district of Basmahane. When the Archaeological Museum was opened in the Culture Park in 1951 the museum in Basmahane was used as a depot for some of the objects. Meanwhile the construction of Izmir Regional Museum was begun in Bahribaba Park.

Saint Polycarp Church
This is the oldest Christian church in Izmir which was built in 1625 with the permission of Sultan Suleyman of the Ottoman Empire and by the wish of King of France Louis 13th. It was dedicated to St. Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, who was martyred by Romans in 155 AD, at the age of 86, in the stadium near Kadifekale.

Anglican Church
The first Anglican Church in Izmir was built around 1625 by British Levantines of Smyrna. A second church was built in 1843 for the use of British living in Smyrna and named for St. John the Evangelist, completed in 1899 with a capacity of around 150 seats.

Havra Street
Havra is an important street of historical Kemeralti neighborhood. Local people come here to get their fresh vegetables, fruits, fish and meat. The street gets its name from many Jewish synagogues (Havra in Turkish) built here. There are nine Synagogues on this street but only four are operative today, Talmud Torah is the oldest of nine in this street.

These Roman aquaducts were built on the Meles (Kemer) river to bring fresh water to the city. They're from late Roman period and double arches were built by bricks and stones stick together with Roman mortar.

Clock Tower
The clock tower at Konak Square is Izmir's landmark today. It was built by architect Raymond Charles Pere in 1901 to commemorate 25th year of enthronement of Ottoman sultan Abdulhamit I.

Wind Mills
As you approach Foca, you can notice these historic wind mills on top of the Degirmen Hill. The wind mills were built mainly in the 19th century and some of them were in function until 1960's. Strong northern winds of Foca secured that these mills did their job well. The wind mills of Foca are in bad conditions today but local government has plans to restore them for tourism in the near future.

Turkish Baths Izmir
There are two Turkish Baths from the Ottoman period in Foca, both of them in Ataturk neighborhood. They have lost some of their architectural elements since many centuries. One of them has a typical dome in the middle but other one is badly damaged.

Ottoman Cemetery
This old cemetery was used for burials between 16th and 19th centuries. The tomb stones have floral decorations on them such as roses, cypress trees, pomegranate, grapes, dates etc. The cemetery is not used anymore as there is a new one around the town.

Hafiz Suleyman Mescid
This is a small mosque (Mescid in Turkish) built in 1548 by Haci Mustafa, head of the guard of Foca castle. It was made of local stone and restored several times between 18th-19th centuries, closed for prayers in 1917 and than re-opened in 1992.

Kayalar Mosque
The mosque is inside the Bes Kapilar Castle. It was built in the 15th or 16th century by the Ottomans. The minaret was rebuilt in the 19th century. The Sadirvan (fountain for ablutions) stands on the west of the mosque. It has a rectangular shape and the wooden flat roof was renewed recently.

It's one of the oldest monuments from the Ottoman period in Foca, although it lost most of its architectural characteristics because of restorations until today.

Dis Kale (External Castle)
The castle, known as Genoese Castle as well, was built in the 17th century in a strategic point securing the protection of the city. It was built on the tip of a small peninsula and separated from the land by a huge trench to the east.

Bes Kapilar Castle (Five Gates Castle)
The Bes Kapilar Castle was built by Genoese but there existed a smaller forth since the Hellenistic period. When Phokaia was captured by the Ottomans in 1455, its ramparts were repaired and towers were added.

Tas Ev (Stone House)
Tas Ev is a monumental tomb located on the side of the road some 10 kilometers before Foca. The 4,5 meter high tomb was cut partially of the rock between 5th and 4th centuries BC and was influenced from the Persian style.

Islands
There are some small islands facing Foca, these are; Orak, Incir, Kartdere, Fener, Hayirsiz, and Metalik Islands. Especially two of them, Orak and Incir, are the islets known as the Sirens' Rocks mentioned in the Homer's Odyssey.

Seytan Hamami (Devil's Baths)
Seytan Hamami is a tomb cut out of the rock at the foot of Can Hill, around 2 kilometers east from Foca center. It's probably dating back to the 4th century BC.

FOCA (PHOKAIA)
Foca is a cute little town on the Aegean Sea, 70 kilometers (some 40 miles) north of Izmir. It's populations is around 36thousand people but in the summer time it goes up to 70 thousand with local and foreign holiday makers who prefer this area for its natural beauties, crystal clear water, small coves, and the climate.

Many legends are known about the derivation of the name of Izmir. According to the knowledge acquired from scientific studies the word "IZMIR" came from Smyrna in the ancient Ionian dialect and it was written as Smyrna in the Attikan (around Athens) dialect. The word Smyrna was not Greek.
