HAGHIA SOPHIA
We must begin by explaining the origin of the name. Sophia, the name of a street dancer, a courtesane who became empress, has nothing to do with the name of this cathedral, which is taken from the Greek. Sophia meaning “wisdom" to which is added the adjective «Saint», to form the phrase "Divine Wisdom”.

Üsküdar is located on the Anatolian side at the entrance to the Bosphorus. EYUP
Established at time of the conquest, Eyup was Istanbul’s first Ottoman Turkish settlement. The district is located beyond the city walls on the south bank of the Golden Horn and takes its name from the tomb of Eyyub al Ensari, a companion of the prophet Mohammed, who is believed to have died there during the Muslim siege of Istanbul in the 7th century.

CEMBERLITAS TURKISH BATH
The Cemberlitas Hammam is located next to the Cemberlitas Column, near the Grand Bazaar. It was built by architect Sinan with the wish of Nurbanu Sultan, mother of Sultan Murat III and wife of Selim II, in 1854 to provide a source of revenue for the Valide-i Atik Mosque in Uskudar.

EGYPTIAN BAZAAR
The Egyptian Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı in Turkish) is also known as Spice Market. It's located just behind the Yeni Mosque at Eminonu district, at the entrance of the Golden Horn. The Bazaar was originally made of wood in mid-17th century by the architect Kazim Aga, and got its final restorations during mid-forties.

ISTANBUL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The archaeological remains in Turkey were assembled for the first time and preserved in the interior of what was the Church of St. Irene, situated behind Saint Sophia. It was founded, erected in one of the outer gardens of Topkapi Palace thanks to the initiative of Osman Hamdi Bey, one of the pioneers of painting in our country and himself a master of this art. Appointed head of the Museum with the title of Director General (1381), he organised the excavations at Saida (the ancient Sidon).

Where Dolmabahce Square is now 250 to 300 years ago, there was nothing but a wide bay. Where there is dry land today, the waters of the Bosphorus rolled then. In the reigns of sultans Ahmet I, the builder of the Blue Mosque, and Osman I, sometimes called «Young Osman», the bay was filled in and thus got its name Dolmabahce or filled garden.

This palace was built by Abdulhamid, and consists of kiosks, chalets and pavilions. If ! 'have been talking of palace since the description of Dolmabahce, please do not think this is a sign of a special predilection. One has only to remember that this city called Istanbul -has been the capital of empire upon empire for more than 2000 years and one will be surprised no longer at the vast number of palaces.

BEYLERBEYI PALACE
An old palace built by Mahmud II between the years 1826/27 formerly existed on this site; when this was ravaged by fire Abdul Mecid I transferred himself to the Palace of Ciragan, but at his death, his brother and heir Abdul Aziz had the facade of the present palace reconstructed in marble (1865) and proceeded to make some fundamental alterations.

BASILICA CISTERN
Arriving at Saint Sophia (Aya Sofya), and entering square from the right, we see to the left to the asphalt avenue, the Subterranean Palace (Yerebatan Sarayi), also as the Cistern Basilica. The cistern is illuminated and viewed from a wooden platform, appears quiet without life, but the air is fresh and the whole place imbued with mysterious atmosphere. It is solidly built, in the classical tradition, and its regular formal beauty is very satisfying.

SAINT IRENE
Church of St. Irene is of Byzantine construction and style. This was the first Christian church put up by the Byzantines in the city. When Constantine the Great took possession of the city he enlarged this church; excavations have revealed that before the church was dedicated to St. Irene, it served as a temple to Aphrodite and some other Roman Gods.

THE MOSQUE OF FATIH-
The mosque constructed at the Conqueror's orders was designed by a great architect named Sinan the Elder. Begun in 1463, it was finished in 1471. The mosque was composed of two large complete domes and a semi-dome on the mihrab side. It had two minarets, each with a balcony, and with lead-covered pinnacles. All round the mosque, cultural and social centres were installed.

Kariye, from the Greek "Chora" meaning village or even merely district, shows that this historic monument was originally only a very small church, a sanctuary built outside the walls by Constantine the Great. TOPKAPI PALACE
Topkapı Palace is one of the most important places to be seen in Istanbul. The first outer gate of the Palace we come to is called the Bab-i Humayun, or Imperial Gate; it was built in 1459, 6 years after the Conquest. After his victorious entry into the city, the young Conqueror Mehmet II retired to rest in the Old Seraglio of the time, which is today the University of Istanbul at Beyazit, he did not move to Topkapi until some time later, after the Palace had been properly fitted out.

Istanbul had virtually fallen into ruin when it passed into Turkish hands. Clavijo, who came to the city in 1403, wrote that the city was empty and the doors of St. Sophia were lying on the ground. But, to repair the ruins of the city, the walls were repaired after the conquest, it was the first architectural task.
